5 Important Elements to Look For in a Funeral Home

Featured Image

We all have unique end-of-life wishes, and it’s important to find a home that caters to yours. You deserve a celebration that represents your life and personality.

However, it can be difficult to narrow down your options if you don’t know where to start. Read on for a checklist of needs to consider as you weigh your options.

1. Your Comfort Level

Your comfort with the staff and facilities should be a main priority when choosing a funeral home. How certain do you feel that each funeral home you’re considering will respect your wishes? How reassured do you feel that each director understands your needs? If you don’t feel completely comfortable and confident in a funeral home’s ability to carry out your last wishes, it may be time to move on.

Some things to contemplate:

  • Do they understand or have experience with my religious needs?
  • Do they respect my cultural needs?
  • Does the home feel like a clean and safe environment?
  • Is the staff helpful and attentive?

2. Up-to-Date and Accommodating Space

When narrowing down the location of your funeral home there are many factors to consider regarding the appearance and technology.

A warm and comfortable atmosphere with tasteful décor is a perfect setting for reminiscing with family and friends. Technology, such as complimentary Wi-Fi and integrated sound and TV systems allows families to customize a service or memorial in any way they choose.

Also consider if the facility has adequate parking space, covered parking, accessible restrooms, and accommodates handicap guests.

3. Testimonials and Referrals

If a friend or family member referred you to a funeral home, or you heard positive feedback about a particular home, it is worth consideration. Social proof can be an effective way to narrow down your search.

If you don’t know anyone personally who can recommend a home, ask each home you’re considering for testimonials, or search each home’s website for reviews.

4. Goods and Services

Not every home offers the same goods and services. As an example, only some facilities own their own crematory. Others offer caskets, vaults, urns and keepsakes. Once you’ve narrowed down your final wishes, be sure your chosen home can accommodate them.

Some goods and services to consider:

  • Do they own their own crematory?
  • What kinds of services and memorials do they offer?
  • What goods do they offer, such as caskets and urns?
